TMU Hosts Guest Lecture on Intellectual Property in the Digital Economy
Tashkent Metropolitan University (TMU) continues to strengthen its practice-oriented legal education with a special guest lecture delivered by Ulugbek Abdullayev, Partner at Dentons Uzbekistan.
The session, held on April 1, 2026, brought together second-year law students for an in-depth discussion on intellectual property (IP) rights in today’s rapidly evolving commercial and digital landscape.
The lecture focused on the growing importance of intellectual property as a strategic asset in modern economies. Ulugbek Abdullayev provided students with both theoretical foundations and practical insights into how IP rights function in business and innovation-driven environments.
During the session, participants explored the key types of intellectual property rights, including trademarks, copyrights, patents, and trade secrets. Special attention was given to the processes of IP registration and protection in Uzbekistan, highlighting the legal mechanisms available to businesses and creators.
A significant part of the discussion addressed the commercial use of intellectual property through licensing, assignment, and franchising agreements. Students gained valuable understanding of how these tools are used to monetize IP assets and support business expansion.
The lecture also examined the challenges faced by IT companies and startups in protecting their innovations, particularly in the digital space. Practical case studies allowed students to analyze real-world scenarios involving IP disputes, enforcement strategies, and judicial practices.
In addition, recent trends in intellectual property law and case practice were reviewed, providing attendees with up-to-date knowledge relevant to both local and global contexts.
The session was conducted in an interactive format combining a lecture with case study discussions, encouraging active student participation and critical thinking. As part of the academic program, attendance was mandatory for second-year law students, reflecting TMU’s commitment to integrating practical expertise into its curriculum.
By hosting industry experts such as Ulugbek Abdullayev, TMU continues to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice, equipping future legal professionals with the skills and knowledge required to navigate complex legal challenges in the digital age.
