British Council Uzbekistan Country Director Visits Tashkent Metropolitan University

Michael Houlgate, Country Director of the British Council Uzbekistan, visited Tashkent Metropolitan University, where he met with students and delivered a guest lecture.

Mr. Houlgate, who began his tenure as Country Director in August 2025, shared insights about his personal and professional journey — from starting as an English teacher in China to leading the British Council in Uzbekistan.

During his talk, he offered students advice for achieving success. He emphasized the importance of pursuing one’s passion, noting that people are drawn to those who are passionate. He encouraged students to explore different fields to discover what truly inspires them. Flexibility, dedication, and hard work were also highlighted as key ingredients for success.

In addition, Mr. Houlgate provided an overview of the British Council’s work in Uzbekistan. Operating in the country for 30 years, the British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organization for cultural relations and educational opportunities. He briefed students on the organization’s various programs and projects in Uzbekistan.

The event concluded with a Q&A session, during which Mr. Houlgate responded to students’ questions and engaged with them on their aspirations and career goals.
